General information

To travel to Rwanda a visa is usually required with a few exceptions.

Nationals of the following countries are exempt from visas for stays of less than 90 days: Burundi, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, Rep. Dem. From Congo, Singapore, Tanzania.

Do you need a Visa for Rwanda?

Obtaining a visa is mandatory to enter Rwanda and until further notice, it is obtained upon arrival.

French nationals can obtain a free tourist visa upon arrival in Rwanda with a maximum validity of 30 days (single entry). They must renew their request each time they leave the territory.

French nationals (as well as member countries of the EAC, Francophonie and Commonwealth) wishing to extend their tourist stay in Rwanda can submit a request for an extension of stay for a period of 30 days at the price of 50 US dollars (renewable twice for a stay of a maximum duration of 90 days without leaving the territory).

It is possible to obtain a single Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda visa valid for 90 days (known as the “East Africa Tourist visa” with multiple entries), at the price of 100 dollars. The tourist visa (EAC) can be obtained on arrival, at the borders or at the Rwandan embassy in Paris and Visa Travel International can assist you with these procedures.

Business travelers can apply to the Rwandan embassy in Paris for the issuance of a Class T7 – ​​Business visa. This visa is granted to any potential investor, entrepreneur or trader, to travel to Rwanda and explore business opportunities. It is valid for 90 days and renewable once. The holder of a Class T7 visa is entitled to multiple entries, but is not authorized to work.

Conditions of entry in Rwanda

In order to enter Rwanda, the traveller will need to carry his passport (with a visa if needed) as well as a return flight ticket.

A PCR test may be requested to participate in an official event bringing together the public or a conference.

Tourism within the country is authorized under the following conditions: the presentation of a negative COVID-19 test less than 72 hours old to visit the national parks: a PCR test is required to go see the primates of the Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura parks, a rapid antigen test is accepted for other activities and for Akagera Park.

It should be noted that, even if the traveller is in possession of all the documents requested to validate his entry into Rwanda, the Rwandan authorities reserve the right to refuse access to their territory without having to justify it.

Understanding the Visa for Rwanda

The visa is based on the dates indicated on the documents provided at the time of the visa application

  •  An original passport, signed and valid for at least 6 months + a photocopy of the passport data page
  • A completed and signed form
  • A “identity” photo on the front
  • A letter of invitation from your correspondents indicating the reason, duration of stay, contact information of the correspondent and the cost of stay and travel
  • A letter from your company stating the reason, duration of stay, contact information of the correspondent and the cost of stay and travel
  • A copy of the return flight ticket
  • A copy of the vaccination book including the yellow fever vaccine
  • A copy of the residence card as well as a proof of residence for non-French people

Upon arrival in Rwanda you will have to undergo a PCR test again and pay the sum of 60 USD. While waiting for the result, you will have to stay confined 24 hours a day in a hotel provided for this purpose.
